Martin Luther King talked about character

“I dream that one day my kids will be judged not by the color of their skin, but by the contents of their character,” once said Martin Luther King Jr.

Sadly, we have not reached that day Martin dreamed about because character has become a passé.

Too many people are more concerned with “self esteem” than character because character building takes too much work.

This happening shouldn’t be a surprise because in order to teach character, a moral center is necessary. What made Martin Luther King so powerful was that he was a man of faith who strongly believed in God, an entity greater than himself.

It was faith in God that gave Martin his morale center, but we have pushed God aside and instead want to do things our way.

So let’s take prayer out of the public schools because it’s better not to damage the self esteem of a tiny group of people.

Our character suffered as a result.

Let’s tell some lies about the faith beliefs of our Founding Fathers so others will be misled away from God.

Character suffers again.

Let’s throw away dignity and make fools of ourselves on Realty TV for a few bucks or fleeting fame.

Character shrinks even more.

Let’s set aside the Bible, a book that was very important to Martin, because it’s too old and can’t possibly apply to life in today’s world.

Let’s replace it with Oprah because she knows what’s best for America.

Let’s stop teaching our kids how to be respectful of others whether their ugly, or fat, or unpopular, or just different. If we did that, bullying would not exist.

But, character building takes too much work and we’ve thrown away our tools to teach it.

Martin talked about character.
